Freedom

Notes from the desk of Pastor Doug:

This month we celebrate the Fourth of July. For all who celebrate this holiday, we think of the word freedom. We have freedom to work where we want, live where we want, eat what we want, worship where we want, and many other freedoms that are too numerous to begin to mention. Moreover, we never want to forget that freedom comes with a price. Our freedom comes at the price of many who gave their lives so that we may have and enjoy those freedoms today. However, I think there is a negative side to freedom.

Yes, we have the freedom to say and do many things, but do we need to exercise that freedom? We have the freedom to eat anything we wish, but is it prudent that we do so? No, because excessive eating and or improper nutrition is not conducive to a healthy lifestyle. I have the freedom to tell my wife that she is getting fat; however, the only freedom that will give me is the freedom to sleep on the couch.

What freedoms do we need not exercise? The Bible teaches, “All things are lawful but all things are not expedient.” Yes, we have the freedom to do many things but do we need to? Is it needful or productive to exercise that right of freedom? With freedom comes responsibility. I challenge you to think about the freedoms you need to exercise and those you may need to restrain from exercising. I know that if you trust God, He will guide and teach you the liberties which will mature you in life.
